You might not know it, but it’s been barely 100 years since the establishment of Avalon, and the development and growth of Avalon Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches began.
Originally the traditional home of the indigenous Garigal people in Guringai country, it wasn’t until the 1920s that the now famous seaside town was actually named.
In Arthurian legend, Avalon was an island paradise situated somewhere in the western seas off ancient Britain, a place where the mythical King Arthur and his faithful warrior companions were transported in the afterlife.
Definitely no island, but far more advantageously situated in much warmer southern latitudes, Avalon Beach today remains a paradise – a veritable Shangri-La - for those that choose to live, work and play there.
Blessed with dramatic headlands and imposing cliffs that bookend its iconic surfing beach, and a vibrant commercial hub barely a stone’s throw from the sand, Avalon Beach is home to a rich beach culture and a plethora of ocean-oriented businesses.
For those prepared to seek them out though, there are some additional hidden treasures waiting to be discovered just over the road and down the hill from the surf club.
Intrigued? Confused? Here’s a clue to help you unlock one of Avalon’s best kept secrets.
Hidden in plain sight in an old laneway linking Old Barrenjoey Rd and Edward Hock Avenue is where you’ll find The Sneaky Grind café, an aromatic cornucopia of coffee, cakes and cool.
A fave hangout for those who know, you’ll soon discover that it also boasts a sumptuous stash of independent Australian surfwear, surf equipment and stylish accessories ranging from tees, boardies and surf wax, to towels, fins, handplanes, eyewear and sunscreen.
That’s right, since 2017 The Sneaky Grind has been the bricks and mortar home, showcase and shopfront for Avalon’s very own Surf Collective – the home of independent Aussie surf brands.
So, if you’re tired of the same old threads and stuff, and are on the hunt for quality Australian surf gear, apparel and accessories - look no further than the diverse range of products available under the one roof right now at The Sneaky Grind
